On Hatteras Island, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the tiny hamlet of Frisco lies between Buxton and Hatteras Village. Private planes often avail themselves of the free parking at the Billy Mitchell Airport. Pilots should be aware that there is no fuel available at this facility. It is completely unmanned. There is a webcam at the site to allow you to check weather conditions visually.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation maintains NC-12, running from Frisco north as well as the ferry system. The ferry terminals are located in Hatteras to the north and the route terminates in Okracoke. Reservations are not required for the 40-minute crossing.
