The United States Lifesaving Service commissioned the Garniels Hill Lifesaving Station in 1878. The U.S. Coast Guard re-built it and manned it throughout World War II, but it was part of the Kitty Hawk Community until 1946, when it became a resort. Incorporation took place in 1979. A couple of sand roads provided access to the maritime forest area at the time. In the 1960s, the original lifesaving station burned down, erasing the key to its origins.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population of the once rural forest area had grown to 2,714. Today, the area is predominantly residential with few businesses cluttering Southern Shores real estate. Since there are plenty of stores and services minutes away in other towns along the Northern Beaches, residents can enjoy the peace and quiet without sacrificing the conveniences found in larger communities.

Southern Shores Parks and Recreation

Runners enjoy some of the great races held in Southern Shores, like the annual OBXMAS 10K, benefiting local charities and National Running Day in June. Another great way to get into and stay in shape is to ride on the many bike trails in and around the community.

Inshore fishing in Currituck Sound is one of the most popular things to do. North Carolina does require you to get a fishing license to go after the many species close to the Island. If you are more interested in big game fish, you will want to charter a boat to reach the Gulf Stream waters.

Visitors can reach Southern Shores via the US-158 and Wright Memorial Bridge and the NC-12, running the length the Outer Banks and always the scenic route. Outer Banks Air Charters, Coastal Helicopters and Barrier Island Aviation offer charter flights. Norfolk International Airport is the closest facility offering international flight.
